As you can see we have reached peak foliage this week here in the White Mountains! All of these pictures have been taken in the past few days throughout Pinkham Notch and Crawford Notch. The red hues have started to become more prominent in the past couple of days, so this weekend will be the best time to see the fall foliage! The photo above (taken yesterday!) is of Mt. Adams, elv. 5774' (left summit) and Mt. Madison, elv. 5367' (right summit).
The picture above is taken from Lost Pond, a popular hike (1 mile round trip) from Pinkham Notch. Trail conditions are currently dry, but be careful of the fallen leaves covering the rocks and roots!
Earlier this week I hiked to Zealand Mountain (elv. 4260') which is a fantastic day hike (5.6 miles RT) from Zealand Falls Hut.The trail to Zealand Hut from the trailhead is an easy 2.8 miles making a great destination for families. Picture to the left is from the Zealand Falls.
A great hike with some fantastic views is up to Zeacliff Ledge, a moderate 1.3 mile hike (one way) from Zealand Falls Hut via the Twinway Trail, also part of the Appalachian Trail (AT). The hike is worth the reward with views looking southeast into the Pemigewasset Wilderness, as seen in the picture to the right, and west towards the Presidental Range.
Yesterday I was able to get up to the Alpine Zone on the Summit of Mount Washington, where views looking into the valleys was in prime foliage. I was able to get a 120 mile visibility day where you can see all the way to the Atlantic Ocean! Trail conditions on the summit are currently free of snow and ice and were dry yesterday, there is no call for rain until Sunday this weekend, so tomorrow will make a great summit day for those of you visiting the White Mountains this weekend!
